What’s Happening This Week: Arbor Day Celebration, Artists’ Market, Author Talks – Decaturish

DeKalb County, Georgia — Various events are taking place this week in and around DeKalb County, including a tree seedling giveaway at Legacy Park to celebrate Arbor Day, an Artist’s Market at Waller’s Coffee Shop, and author talks. organized by the Georgia and Louisiana Centers for the Book as well as Little Shop des Histoires. Several local government meetings are also scheduled for this week.
Here’s what’s happening this week:
The Obama Portrait Tour
The five-city tour of Obama’s portraits will tour the country through May 2022. The exhibit has been traveling since June 2021 and is expected to reach millions of people. The portraits will be at the High Museum of Art in Atlanta until March 20. The exhibition will include audio-visual elements, teacher workshops led by the portrait gallery, presentations by curators and a richly illustrated book. Due to high demand for this exhibition, an exhibition-specific ticket is required for all visitors.

KAWS Prints
The artist KAWS made his first serigraphs in the late 1990s and has since continued his printmaking practice alongside his production of paintings, sculptures and edited objects. KAWS brings into conflict and reconciles the worlds of fine art, industrial design, technology and popular culture. KAWS Prints is the first comprehensive exhibition showcasing the artist’s entire output of published prints spanning over 20 years. The exhibition is on view at the High Museum of Art until March 27.

“And I have to scream”
Emory University’s Michael C. Carlos Museum will feature an engaging exhibit on January 29. “And I Must Scream” was developed by Dr. Amanda H. Hellman, curator of African art at the museum. The exhibition will feature photographs, paintings, sculptures, drawings and site-specific installations by 10 local, national and international contemporary artists. The work acts as a call to action and shows that these crises are urgent and interconnected. The accompanying programming will bring in scholars and artists to teach classes, host performances, and create new works of art. The exhibition ends on May 15.

Conversations with Tucker voters
Tucker City Council member Alexis Weaver will be joined in conversation by Dr. Sandra Valenciano, district health director for the DeKalb Board of Health, Thursday, Feb. 17 at 1 p.m. via Zoom. The theme of the conversation is black health and well-being. Valenciano will discuss the DeKalb Board of Health’s initiatives to address disparities in health care access for DeKalb County’s Black community.

Tucker Farmer’s Market
The Tucker Farmers’ Market will be open Thursday, February 17, from 4-6 p.m. curbside pickup at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, 4882 Lavista Road in Tucker. The market has more than 35 vendors, including a diverse group of local farmers, bakers, growers and producers from Tucker, the Atlanta metro area and Georgia. The market accepts online orders. The online store opens on Thursday afternoon and closes at 3 p.m. on Wednesday.

Little Story Shop Author Event
Little Shop of Stories will host author Paddy Donnelly virtually to launch his “Dodos are Not Extinct” picture book on Thursday, February 17 at 5 p.m. via Facebook Live. Donnelly will share the secrets behind the making of her book, from the art to the story to the facts about the animals in the book.

Opportunity for Public Engagement in Kirkwood Zoning
Public engagement opportunities related to the rezoning of the property at 2015 Memorial Drive will take place in Kirkwood this week and next week. Neighboring owners will meet Thursday, February 17 at 6:15 p.m. at the Kirkyard Public House and Friday, February 18 at 9 a.m. at Taproom Coffee.

Fernbank Audubon Parkway
The Georgia Audubon Society will help guests learn about the feathered inhabitants of the Fernbank Forest on Saturday, February 19, from 9:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. All ages are welcome. Fernbank recommends participants bring binoculars, field guides, and water. Wearing a mask is mandatory for everyone attending the march. These walks have a limited capacity, and social distancing will be practiced as best as possible on the trails.

Oakhurst Farmers Market
The Oakhurst Farmers Market will be open Saturday, February 19 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Scepter Brewing Arts, 630 East Lake Drive in Decatur. Find all your fresh produce, meat, delicious pastries and more from weekly vendors. Additional offerings include live music and chef demonstrations with seasonal recipes.

Decatur City Arbor Day
The City of Decatur is distributing seedlings Saturday, Feb. 19 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Legacy Park, 500 S. Columbia Drive, in celebration of Arbor Day. The first 200 residents of the city will receive a free bicentennial tree as well as an official bicentennial certificate as part of the 1000 Trees by 2023 project. Tree options include red oaks, willow oaks, dogwoods and Virginia pines. To enter, text 770-686-6279 with a name, address where seedlings will be planted, number and type of trees requested. Pick them up at the drive through event. Seedlings are available on a first come, first served basis.

Cafe Waller Artists Market
Waller’s Coffee is hosting an Artists’ Market on Saturday, February 19 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the cafe, 240 Dekalb Industrial Way. Sellers can register now, and all types of sellers are welcome. 10×10 outlets are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Vendors will need to bring their own awning and tables and may set up anytime after 8 a.m.

The three artistic directors
The Emory Chamber Musice Society of Atlanta presents “The Three Artistic Directors” as the next concert in the Emerson Series on Saturday, February 19 at 8 p.m. at Emerson Hall at the Schwartz Center, 1700 N. Decatur Road. Violinist Linda Rosenthal joins cellist Zuill Bailey and pianist William Ransom for Beethoven’s Sonatas and Shostakovich’s powerful Trio in E Minor. All ECMSA programs are free, but registration is required. Masks and proof of vaccination are required for all events at the Schwartz Center.

Avondale Estates Farmers Market
Join neighbors, visitors and vendors on Sunday, February 20 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. for the Avondale Estates Farmers Market, located in my parents’ basement parking lot, 22 N Avondale Road. Browse a colorful array of local foods and produce. Items on offer include baked goods, cheeses, eggs, homemade jellies, meats, and produce.
