UP Notable Book Club presents a Q&A with Phil Bellfy, author of the award-winning book, “UP Colony: The Story of Resource Exploitation in Upper Michigan – Focus on Sault Sainte Marie Industries.”
CRYSTAL FALLS – The Crystal Falls Community District Library, in partnership with the UP Publishers and Authors Association, hosts regular author events featuring authors named to the UP Notable Books list.
The 20th event will take place at 7 p.m. EST on Thursday, August 11, with Phil Bellfy, whose book “UP Colony: The Story of Resource Development in Upper Michigan – Focus on Sault Sainte Marie Industries,” is a bold reinterpretation of 300 years of history in the Soo that leads to startling conclusions.

Bellfy, Ph.D., is editor and publisher of Ziibi Press, and is an enrolled member of the White Earth Band of Minnesota Chippewa, co-director of the Center for the Study of Native Frontier Issues, and professor emeritus of Native American Studies, University of State of Michigan.

He has been involved in environmental issues, at the tribal, international, national, state and local levels for over 45 years.
He is also a lay attorney, qualified and admitted to practice tribal law in the courts of Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians.
Bellfy is also the author of “Indians and Other Misnames: A Cross-Reference Dictionary of Native North American People, Persons, and Places”, Three Fires Unit: The Anishnaabeg of the Lake Huron Borderlands,” and the editor of “Honoring the Earth: Indigenous Response to Environmental Degradation in the Great Lakes, Second Edition. »
