“We are delighted to welcome Sue Halpern to the Manchester Community Library and appreciate her agreeing to headline our fundraiser this year,” said Sally Hespe. Her article in The New York Review, titled “In Praise of Public Libraries” discusses the critical role libraries play in the lives of our communities – something we experience and see every day at MCL. This fundraising is essential to our ability to provide an inspiring gathering place and a wide range of resources for our neighbors and the general public.
Unlike many libraries across the country, Manchester Community Library is not 100% taxpayer funded. The library receives only a portion of its annual operating budget (as voted each year) from the community. The majority of its funding comes from donors and grants.
“Tickets purchased for this event and proceeds from the more than 9,000 books on sale will go directly towards supporting the programs, services and resources that community members use every day, free of charge,” Hespe said.
In addition to Halpern’s appearance, the Festival will feature a host of other Vermont authors as well as story times and activities for families, musical performances, a showcase of non-profit organizations from region and of course, the sale of more than 9,000 books as new and lightly used. of all genres, for people of all ages.
