The Bud Werner Library offers free screenings, an event with the author, more this month

The Bud Werner Library in Steamboat Springs will offer a free community screening of “The Neutral Ground,” a documentary about memory, monuments and breaking from confederation.
The screening will take place at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, June 29 in the library room. According to the library, the film documents New Orleans’ struggle for landmarks and America’s troubled romance with Lost Cause.
In 2015, director CJ Hunt was filming the New Orleans City Council’s vote to remove four Confederate monuments. But when that withdrawal was cut short by death threats, CJ sought to understand why a losing army from 1865 still wields so much power in America.

The Oscar-nominated Ukrainian shows up at the library on Monday
The library will also be offering a chance to watch “Donbass,” the Oscar-nominated Ukrainian film, in a free special screening at 7 p.m. on Monday, June 27, in the library lobby.
The film is currently playing in theaters nationwide and will only have a one-night Steamboat run.
According to the library, it focuses on the Donbass region in eastern Ukraine in the mid-2010s, as a Hybrid War unfolds alongside large-scale murders and robberies, perpetrated by Russian separatist gangs.
Called “a dark, satirical omnibus of scathing vignettes” by The Washington Post, “Donbass” serves as a crucial take on the Russian-Ukrainian war, but the film is not, ultimately, the story of a region or conflict. Instead, it’s a world lost in post-truth and false identities.
The Los Angeles Times wrote, “There’s no other anti-war film like ‘Donbass,’ Ukrainian filmmaker Sergei Loznitsa’s series of brutally factual and cynically comedic vignettes illustrating social destabilization in the war-torn region. eastern ukrainian war.

Tickets are on sale now for the one-day Literary Sojourn author festival in Steamboat Springs on Saturday, September 10 at the Strings Pavilion.
The nonprofit literary festival is presented by the Bud Werner Memorial Library, and this year’s featured authors include Omar El Akkad, Jason Mott, Gary Shteyngart, Claire Vaye Watkins and the return of Karen Joy Fowler as emcee. .

The Library’s Author Series continues at 7 p.m. on Thursday, June 30 with an evening with author and adventurer Jim Davidson, who returns to share his new book, “The Next Everest: Surviving the Mountain’s Deadliest Day and Finding the Resilience to Climb”.
