The author uses the light of God within her during her darkest hour

Author Janie Peña Menchaca spent her childhood growing up in the West Side “barrio” (neighbourhood) of San Antonio during the 1950s and 1960s. to “find” God. These formative years marked her deeply and shaped much of her life in the neighborhood and beyond.

In her new book “Christ With Me in the Neighborhood and Beyond: Reflections on the Spiritual Journey of a Mexican American Woman,” Menchaca recounts her life, her spiritual journey, and how she escaped violence to enjoy a happy and fulfilling life.

Menchaca’s happy childhood and adolescence ended abruptly when she was kicked out of her home at the age of 18 and ostracized by her family. Months later, she found herself pregnant and single, and ultimately in an abusive marriage. She fell victim to “machismo,” the attitude that men should dominate women.

“I want my story to be a source of hope and healing for those who experience abuse,” Menchaca said, “whether it’s physical, emotional, sexual, or spiritual. There’s no shame in asking for help and advice and to get away from a dangerous relationship.

Janie credits her relationship with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ with helping her through the darkest time in her life.

Menchaca’s blend of rich Mexican-American heritage, his Catholic experiences, his heartaches and challenges that connected the dots as an adult with the knowledge of his beloved savior, coalesce to become a delicately woven message of love, faith and hope. Menchaca hopes readers will have a deeply emotional connection to her story. She wants to share the fact that God’s immense, unfathomable and unconditional love is for everyone, regardless of their cultural, ethnic or religious background.
