‘Sex and the City’ Writer Candace Bushnell Reveals Why She’ll Never Join ‘RHONY’

Candace Bushnell’s name has been floating around for years as a cast member to join The Real Housewives of New York. And while Bushnell seems like a perfect candidate for RHONY – she’s friends with most actors – she said there was no way she was doing reality TV.

Bushnell recently opened up about why she’d rather watch reality TV than be on reality TV. She was involved in the infamous “Not well b****” line uttered by Dorinda Medley. Bushnell also lives down the street from Luann de Lesseps. And though she loves her friendships with the RHONY cast, she prefers to keep them off camera and explained why.

She’s not a fan of the whole “4th wall” of reality TV

Bushnell said the trips and dinners sounded enticing. Until you meet them and it’s not much fun. “I mean, that sounds like such a fun thing to do, doesn’t it?” she said on the Behind the Velvet Rope with David Yontef Podcast. “You go on a trip, of course, you have to go around in those damn buses all the time. Like, OK, it’s a glamorous bus, but it’s still a fucking bus, but you know, you go on private planes and you go on vacations, you stay in places.

“But the thing is, I mean, first of all, when I went to Ramona’s [Singer] home, I got in trouble,” she explained. “The producers yelled at me because they said I was breaking the fourth wall. It’s like, OK, I didn’t know there was a fourth wall on TV, but OK, that’s fine. But you, you know, there are tons and tons of producers.

But the fourth wall wasn’t the only problem. She said fighting and being told what to do wasn’t appealing. “It’s kind of like going to school, you know, where you have teachers and they’re going to tell you what to do,” she said. “I mean, you really can’t do what you want to do. It sounds fun, but that’s why I’m like, ‘Hmm. I do not know.'”

“Also, I really don’t like yelling at people or conflicts,” she added. “I can’t do that. And you know, I know Ramona. I know Ramona since the 80s and I know Sonja [Morgan] since the nineties. So you know, I don’t want to fight Ramona. I’m just not going to do that.

Dating on ‘RHONY’ is also difficult

She also said that trying to date while being on the show is next to impossible. “I think it’s really hard to find a partner when you’re in those situations,” she said of RHONY. “And what makes it more difficult is that these are heterosexual women. So heterosexual men don’t like this power situation. Then, I mean, I’ve seen that happen a lot, you know, straight men, they don’t really feel comfortable with like, oh, the woman gets all the attention.

“So it’s not just that it’s that, then people also make assumptions about it, about them. You know, like, oh, you have to be like that if you’re with her,” said Bushnell: “And that seems like something straight people don’t like so much.” She added that it’s different if you’ve been married to the person for years.

“But it’s hard to find that relationship like right off the bat,” she said. “You know, if you start from scratch and they are, they only know you as you know, that person. And a lot of guys don’t like that either.
