Parker joined KPBS Midday Edition on Wednesday to discuss his new novel.

“I felt compelled when I started to remember the times I spent there as a young boy at the age of about 14, and it was time for me to write a other book, ”Parker said. “The more I thought about Laguna 1968 and the things I saw, heard and read there, the more I got interested in it, and ‘A Thousand Steps’ kind of just sounded like a story to me and me. required you to sit down and write it down. “

He said the title of the book comes from a childhood memory.

“I love this beach. It was one of the first places I saw as a kid and went to Laguna. I will never forget this beach,” Parker said. “The first time I went there, I don’t know I was probably 14 years old, and I went down the thousand steps to the beach of the thousand steps and I had to count them like anybody else. what kid would, and there were 220 that I remember. ”
