Palomar will welcome the famous author, the lawyer Haben Girma

Haben Girma, Harvard Law School’s first deafblind graduate, will speak at Palomar College in a hybrid in-person/virtual event that will be followed by an on-campus book signing.

SAN MARCOS — Renowned human rights lawyer Haben Girma, author of “Haben: The Deafblind Woman Who Conquered Harvard Law,” will speak at a special event at Palomar College’s Brubeck Theater to be held on Monday, 14 March at 4 p.m.

During the event, titled “Disability and Innovation: A Conversation with Haben Girma,” the human rights lawyer will discuss how she became a lawyer and what communities can do to become more inclusive.

“All of our bodies change over time,” Girma said. “We all deserve dignity and access at every stage of our lives. Most people will have to look for accessibility solutions at some point, whether it’s for a family member, co-worker, or for themselves. Disability is part of the human experience. We must all engage in the work to make our world accessible to all. Inclusion is a choice.

Girma has been honored by many world leaders and was named a White House Champion of Change by US President Barack Obama. She is a Disability Justice Champion and will bring an inspirational message to the Palomar College community, followed by a book signing at 5:00 p.m.

The event is co-organized by Palomar College’s Disability Resource Center (DRC) and MiraCosta College’s Student Accessibility Services (SAS) department. For those unable or prefer not to attend in person, Girma’s address will be broadcast via Zoom. There is no cost for the event, but registration is mandatory for in-person and online participation. Due to space constraints and COVID-19 protocols, a limited number of places are available on site.

“This special opportunity to share an evening with Haben reflects Palomar’s deep commitment to providing professional development and education in the areas of diversity, equity, inclusion, anti-racism and accessibility. (DEIAA),” said DRC Director Dr. Shauna Moriarty.
