Local teenage author-illustrator Tasha Rankin, a student at Madawaska Valley District High School, brings the latest of her books to an all-new story walk at the Madawaska Valley Public Library (MVPL) on August 18. CEO Karen Filipkowski said she was thrilled when Tasha suggested MVPL could use her new tale, Larry’s Amazing Animals, for another children’s event. In August 2020 Tasha’s book Dapper’s muddy dilemma was a big hit on the very first Library Stories Walk. Library staff and volunteers will use Tasha’s illustrations of Larry and his friends to set up a series of fun and interactive stations where children can read and enjoy the story. Along with playing out the story in a fun way, attendees can win lots of prizes at this walk-in event, Filipkowski said. The story walk will take place on the grounds of the library starting at 1:00 p.m.
The library celebrates the authors of the valley
Local authors have brought a great season to residents of the valley of different ages and interests.
On May 30, MVPL hosted a launch event for Combermere resident Brenda Missen’s latest book. Tumblehome: One Woman’s Canoeing Adventures in the Divine Desert at the Combermere Community Center. On July 23, the library brought Barry’s Bay native Carley Fortune back to her hometown for an author talk at the Paul J. Yakabuski Community Center (PJYCC) about her best-selling debut novel set in Barry’s Bay. . Every summer after.

Other delicacies for children at the Library
Knights in the Classroom returned to PJYCC with a half-day fencing training session, featuring appropriately sized foils and safety equipment for all ages enrolled. Thanks to the Kaszuby Cottagers Association for sponsoring the session. (See separate report and photos.) The morning story hour is another regular feature that attracts young people. As always, MVPL crafting kits were a hit this summer. And the August 16 entry deadline for the annual summer vacation kids’ art competition is fast approaching, so be sure to drop by the library to pick up a coloring picture for your child.
Filipkowski said the Library appreciates the support of volunteers and the sponsorship of local businesses and organizations for these events.
