MAYILADUTHURAI: The Mayiladuthurai book fair ended on Thursday, and in a kind of indirect tribute to famous author ‘Kalki’ R Krishnamurthy — who hails from present-day Mayiladuthurai, his novel Ponniyin Selvan has become a favorite among 10 bestsellers – daily sales. While publishers attribute the release of the film adaptation a few weeks ago to new attention to the novel, they point out that some even bought the five-volume tome to experience the climax.

A Pandiyan, the director of Mayilavan Publishers, said, “People are interested in how the film would end and try to read those particular volumes. We encourage them to buy the whole book or all five volumes.” CN Ravikumar, the director of Kumaran Publishers said, “The book was once a favorite of older generations.

The younger generation is also interested in it now. In Vaishnavi, a 21-year-old student from Kidaramkondan said, “I don’t like reading novels very much. I want to start with books like Ponniyin Selvan because it’s the talk of the town now.” P Balamurugan, another Mannampanthal student said, “I’m interested to know what happens after the cliffhanger at the end of the movie.”

Of the 57 publishers and vendors who set up stands at the fair, around 30 sold the novel. Each mentioned sales of about 50 of them. Association executive committee member E Loganathan said: “Around one million people visited the fair.

Many were fascinated to buy the novel. It can be noted that the famous author of the novel, ‘Kalki’ R Krishnamurthy, was born in Puthamangalam in what is now Mayiladuthurai district in 1899. The novel was published in several volumes between 1950 and 1954. Mayiladuthurai district also made part of the Chola kingdom on which Kalki’s novel is based.
