Local libraries will welcome best-selling author Silvia Moreno-Garcia on January 26

St. Charles Public Library joins 200 Illinois State Libraries in a new collaborative effort, Illinois Libraries Present, to offer virtual events with best-selling and esteemed authors in their communities.

The collaborative effort kicks off in January with an event featuring author Silvia Moreno-Garcia.

Moreno-Garcia, the best-selling and award-winning author of “Mexican Gothic,” will discuss his new book, “Velvet Was the Night,” and his genre-defying mashups of cultural noir and Lovecraftian horror.

The event will be held virtually at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, January 26, via Zoom.

To register, visit www.scpld.org.

Silvia Moreno-Garcia is the author of the critically acclaimed novels “Certain Dark Things”, “Gods of Jade and Shadow” and “Mexican Gothic”. Her latest book, “Velvet Was the Night,” was included in the New York Times 100 Notable Books list of 2021.

Set in 1970s Mexico City, the book revolves around a dreamy secretary, a lone enforcer, and the mystery of a missing woman they both desperately seek.

Author events are often the cornerstone of library programming.

Throughout the pandemic, such events have continued, but in a virtual format.

As these events have multiplied, libraries have banded together to host a variety of best-selling, award-winning authors and thought leaders.

Joining forces for such events allows libraries to bring speakers to their communities, which might not be possible due to budget constraints or production capabilities.

And that’s just the purpose of the Illinois Libraries here.

By working together, libraries are able to bring an event to multiple and diverse communities, allowing many library users to attend, while broadening the platform for the author.

Illinois Libraries Present will present an event with Jasmine Guillory in February. The best-selling and romance author has written six novels, including ‘The Wedding Date’ and ‘The Proposal’.

The virtual event with Guillory will take place on Wednesday, February 16.

St. Charles Public Library is located at 1 S. Sixth Ave. in St.Charles. For more information, call (630) 584-0076 or visit www.scpld.org.
