‘Game of Thrones’ author offers update on new books and upcoming shows

Author George RR Martin has posted a detailed update on his Blog Wednesday, with new information on game of thrones spin-off TV shows and his upcoming books. Martin reported major progress on the next book in the series, The Winds of Winter, and revealed that more books will be released this year. He also said all he could about new shows coming to HBO.

First and foremost, Martin promised he was still working A song of ice and fire book 6, The Winds of Winter. He wrote that he didn’t make as much progress in 2021 as he did in 2020, but it looks like he’s still making progress regardless. He revealed that he is simultaneously writing the next installment of his Targaryen Dynasty history book. Fire & Blood, and that he is now several hundred pages in this business. He hasn’t decided on a title for this book yet and thought it might end up being Blood & Fire.

“I know, I know, for many of you, only one of these projects matters,” Martin wrote, alluding to his long-awaited infamous sixth book. “I’m sorry for you. They ALL matter to me. Yes of course I’m still working on WINTER WINDS.”

On the TV side of Westeros, Martin admitted that the “successor shows” to game of thrones “took up a ton of my time and attention this year. He explained that most of that time was spent checking all the material and making sure it matched the canon of his books and the original series.

Martin confirmed that Dragon House finished filming and said he had seen some rough cuts of the episodes. He’s “loved” what he’s seen so far and is eager to share as much information as possible with fans. This includes the other TV shows, although Martin didn’t reveal any major secrets.

“Maybe there [are] a few things I can tell you. Things that HBO has already announced or talked about,” he wrote. “We are developing live shows for HBO and animated shows for HBO Max. No, I can’t tell you how many… Some of the ideas we’re working on have a very different tone and approach to what’s come before, and I’m excited about that. The world of Westeros (and Essos, etc.) is huge, and there’s room for many different kinds of stories, across a wide range of characters.”

Martin then went through the information he is allowed to share about each series, most of which has already been reported or announced. One of the biggest revelations was that the prospective series about Corlys Velaryon changed its title from Nine trips for The sea serpent. He also confirmed that the work on the live action ten thousand ships and Dunk & Egg are in class. He praised the writers working on these – Amanda Segel and Steve Conrad, respectively.

“On the animation side…well, I’m not allowed to talk about most of what’s going on except to say that things are moving really fast, and I love love some of the artistic concepts that I see,” Martin wrote. . He confirmed the rumor that one of the anime shows is set in the remote city-state of Yi Ti, and said that his working title is the golden empire.

“I would tell you more if I could. I don’t think I can say a word about the other anime series. Not yet,” Martin wrote. He also shouted out his other TV shows outside of the Thrones franchise, including the highly anticipated wild cards adaptation.

Finally, Martin mentioned two new books that he says will be available by the end of this year. The first is “a sumptuous coffee table book… An illustrated and condensed version of Fire & Blood ended up with Elio Garcia and Linda Antonsson (my partners on The world of ice and fire), and my Fevre River artistic director, Raya Golden. And another book after that, a Who’s Who in Westeros.”

This is great news for fans of Martin’s work and fans of game of thrones, which could soon follow an entire Westeros television franchise on the scale of a cinematic universe. However, Martin also warned that there is no guarantee that all or even some of these shows will air. For now, the only sure things are Dragon House coming later this year and The Winds of Winter Coming soon.
