LOCAL Fermanagh author Teresa Godfrey recently launched her new dystopian novel which explores themes very close to current world events.
The novel ‘Wipe Out’ is set in the future after the world has been wiped out as a result of a pandemic.
However, the novel was not written during the Covid 19 pandemic, in fact it played no part.
She said: ‘About five years ago I wrote a first draft of it and put it aside because I had other things to do because I also write poetry and news. Then when the pandemic hit, a friend said to me, remember that book you thought you were writing, you should come back to it because now is the perfect time for it.
novel
Teresa describes her novel as action/adventure. She said: “People told me it was a page turner, you’re not just drifting around waiting for something to happen because something is happening all the time.” The book’s blurb describes a world where “family” is a forbidden concept, friendships are forbidden, and all procreation is artificial and controlled by the government.
Teresa said: ‘The main character is Hazel, a young woman in her twenties who was born in a factory and because of the society she lives in she would be quite a cold and emotionally repressed character and this is her story about the how she develops into a person who begins to care about others and discovers her own humanity.
love
“The story is about our need to love and be loved and, okay, you could impose all these laws on people forbidding them to have friendships or fall in love, but they will anyway because you can’t eradicate love.”
Teresa is currently working on the sequel to the novel, which she says is the first part in a trilogy of works.
A book launch will take place at Blakes of the Hollow in Enniskillen at 7 p.m. on April 28.
Teresa said, “There will be wine, awnings and good craic. I will do a reading and a few other writers will also do readings of their work.
“Wipe Out” by Teresa Godfrey published by Roswell Press, an imprint of Sunbury Press, can be purchased on Amazon in print and e-book format.
