Daniel Levine-Spound, author at Just Security

Daniel Levine-Spound (@dlspound) is CIVIC’s UN peacekeeping researcher covering the Democratic Republic of the Congo and South Sudan. Daniel is based in Goma, DRC, and leads CIVIC’s research on the United Nations Organization Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (MONUSCO) and the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS). In recent years, Daniel’s research has focused on early warning and rapid response efforts of United Nations peacekeeping missions, the implementation of human rights due diligence policy (HRDDP), challenges and opportunities in peacekeeping mission transitions and broader responses to protection threats in DRC and the South. Sudan.

Prior to joining CIVIC, Daniel attended Harvard Law School, where his work focused on international humanitarian law and the protection of human rights in the context of armed conflict and counterterrorism operations. As a law student, Daniel co-wrote a book on the criminalization of homosexuality in Tunisia. Prior to law school, Daniel spent two years in Tunis, where he worked for the Cairo Institute for Human Rights Studies and published articles as a freelance writer on the democratic transition in Tunisia and the protection of human rights. In addition to his Juris Doctor (cum laude) from Harvard, Daniel holds a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Comparative Literature from Brown University.
