Filled with humor and down-to-earth wisdom, the book, which hits newsstands August 30, is about “coming to terms with yourself, your body, and finding the lifestyle that’s right for you.” It is published by Speaking Tiger.
“For years people have asked me, ‘What’s your routine? What are you doing to dance like that again? How do you have so much energy? And so on. The confinement left me alone on the Darpana campus and I felt I wanted to write this. It became a memoir because the body and what you end up doing are so connected,” the dancer-turned-author said in a statement.
Born of famous Indian classical dancer Mrinalini Sarabhai and legendary space scientist Vikram Sarabhai, Mallika is an accomplished Kuchipudi and Bharatanatyam dancer who specializes in using the arts for change and social transformation.
In this candid portrait of her extraordinary life, the 69-year-old opens up about her addictions like smoking and how she ‘hypnotized’ herself to get out of it, her fascination with alternative therapies like ‘Pranik healing’ “, Ayurveda and chromotherapy, and the beauty treatments she uses to “perpetuate” her body so she can keep dancing and performing for years to come.
It also gives readers insight into his battles with grief and the Depression — when she lost her beloved father in 1971 and her mother in 2016 — a painful breakup with a man she loved, her ups and downs with her children.
According to the editors, the “never judgmental” memoir delivers an extremely useful message for anyone who wants good health and happiness.
“This is a book that is honest, down-to-earth, and inspiring. We’re sure many readers will come away feeling like they can change their lives if they want to and cope with almost anything!” In the process, Mallika also gives us insight into his illustrious family that is both heartwarming and intriguing,” said Renuka Chatterjee, vice president of publishing at Speaking Tiger.
