Dallas author shows importance of bees in new children’s book
A new book hopes to educate children about the importance of bees in this world.
Beekeeper and conservationist Justin Weiss brings the ABCs of bees to life for the next generation of conservationists in his new children’s book, “B is For Beekeeping: An Alphabet Book.”
Weiss, who is a beekeeper from suburban Dallas, aims to inspire children about the importance of bees with his new book.
“Did you know that a third of the food we eat is pollinated by bees?” Weiss asked in a Monday press release. Weiss started beekeeping a few years ago on a whim. “While at first I was scared to handle bees, it turns out having thousands of them buzzing around is quite therapeutic. This hobby lifted my spirits when I had the need more and I enjoyed sharing it with my friends and family.
In “B is for Beekeeping,” Weiss uses each letter of the alphabet to teach a beekeeping term and idea and each new fact is brought to life with bright, playful illustration.
The book aims to encourage children to explore the world around them and to respect some of the “smallest but mightiest creatures”.
Born and raised in California, Weiss currently lives outside of Dallas on a small suburban farm.
He and his wife have a garden, raise bees, raise quail and chickens, and have an orange cat named Leo.
He is fluent in Spanish, having also lived in Chile, Easter Island and Spain.
Weiss serves his community as an assistant city manager and also as a board member of the local school district’s education foundation.
A portion of all sales of his book will be donated to organizations such as Pollinator Partnership, Bee Conservancy and Project Apis m.
