About our speakers
Thrity Umrigar is the bestselling author of eight novels, including The Space Between Us, which was a PEN/Beyond Margins Award finalist, as well as a memoir and three picture books. His books have been translated into several languages and published in more than fifteen countries. She is the winner of a Lambda Literary Award and a Seth Rosenberg Award and is Emeritus Professor of English at Case Western Reserve University. A recipient of the Nieman Fellowship at Harvard, she has contributed to the Boston Globe, Washington Post, New York Times and Huffington Post.
Chicago-based Rebecca Makkai is the author of the novels The Great Believers, The Hundred-Year House and The Borrower, as well as the collection of short stories Music for Wartime. The Great Believers was a Pulitzer Prize and National Book Award finalist, and received the ALA Carnegie Medal and the LA Times Book Prize, among other honors. Makkai is on the MFA faculties at Sierra Nevada College and Northwestern University, and she is the Art Director of StoryStudio Chicago.
