British author Tessa Hadley’s ‘Free Love’ to be made into TV – Deadline

The latest novel by acclaimed British author Tessa Hadley free love was optioned by Fremantle’s God’s hand indie The Apartment and Lorenzo De Maio’s De Maio Entertainment.

The book, out this week in the UK and next month in the US, is set against the backdrop of 1960s London, telling the story of Phyllis Fischer, 40, a devoted wife and mother who sees her life transformed after an old friend’s son in his twenties visits his family and they share an after-dinner kiss. Newly awakened to the world, Phyllis defies convention to seek love, escape and sexual freedom, and live a more meaningful life.

Fremantle said the book would be ramped up in series, although no network is yet connected.

Hadley is a critically acclaimed British author, whose last novel before free love has been The past.

She praised The Apartment’s Oscar nominee God’s hand as well as its television adaptation of Elena Ferrante my brilliant friend, adding, “It’s very exciting for me to imagine seeing the world of my book through the eyes of The Apartment and De Maio Entertainment.”

Lorenzo Mieli of The Apartment and former Executive Vice President of Endeavor Content De Maio said, “It’s a timeless story filled with flawed and complex characters that we’re thrilled to bring to audiences around the world.

Hadley is replaced by WME, The Joy Harris Literary Agency and United Agents.
