Author to discuss race conflict in Waterloo on Tuesday | Local News

WATERLOO – J. Nicholas De Bonis will discuss the racial and social conflicts of Waterloo during the 1960s at the Cedar Valley Historical Society meeting at 7 p.m. Tuesday. A 1966 East High graduate, De Bonis took to social media to ask other Waterloo graduates from 1963 to 1972 to reminisce about their school experiences. These messages became an integral part of his book, “The Bridge Between: Race, Rage & Reconciliation in 1960s Iowa”, published in 2018.

He is an Air Force (Vietnam, 1969) and Army veteran.

De Bonis holds a BA from Flagler College (St. Augustine, Florida); an MS from Troy State University (Alabama); and a doctorate. from the University of Tennessee-Knoxville. For more than 20 years, he taught college marketing, advertising and communications and co-authored three books on these subjects. He is also a global consultant in strategic customer value management.

The meeting will be held at the Grout Museum of History and Science, 503 South St. Guests are asked to park in the upper South Street parking lot. All programs are open to the public. Refreshments will be served after the meeting. Although not required, the Grout Museum asks the public to please wear a face mask. Free disposable masks will be available.
