PRESS RELEASE
The Boyle County Public Library offers free activities, special events, and online resources for the community. Programs include story time, crafts and interactive activities. In addition to the many programs, the library currently hosts the traveling exhibit “Telling a People’s Story: Literature for African American Children” (TAPS) featuring artwork produced for book illustrations. Information about the exhibit is available on the library’s website at BoylePubLib.org/TAPS. Along with the exhibit, the library offers patrons the opportunity to preserve their history by using the Memory Lab and other library resources to digitize old photos and record oral histories. Here’s a look at some of the upcoming events at the library:
Chess mix
On Saturday October 15 from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m., visit the library and enjoy an afternoon of chess and a tasty snack. This program is for all skill levels. This event will take place in the Reading Room. (all ages)
story time
Each week we will read stories and organize a sensory activity for the enjoyment of young children. Storytime will be held Monday and Tuesday mornings at 10:30 am in the Community Hall this fall. Toddlers and preschoolers are all welcome with their caregivers. (2-5 years)
Workshop Telling your story: life-size drawings
Inspired by the TAPS exhibition, in this seven-week workshop you will use your artistic creativity to tell your story.
On Tuesday, October 18 at 4 p.m., participants will create life-size drawings. There will be opportunities to share your creations with others and hear how these themes are seen in the books in the exhibition. This activity will take place in the community hall. (All youth ages)
Craft Dungeons
During this series of programs, you will be guided through the process of making a craft you can keep. On Tuesday, October 18 at 6 p.m., we will be making balloon pumpkins. This event will take place in the community hall. (18 and over)
Third Thursday Book Club
In October, the book club will read The Splendid and the Vile by Erik Larson. Join the Book Discussion on Thursday, October 20 at 10:30 a.m. in the Community Room. (18 and over)
Author Tour with Patsi Trollinger – Fast and Famous: The Amazing Life of Isaac Murphy Thursday, October 20 at 5:30 p.m. Join local author Patsi Trollinger to learn more about her picture book biography featured in the exhibition Telling the story of a people. An accomplished African-American jockey, Murphy was the direct descendant of slaves. He has won more than 30 high-stakes races and was a three-time Kentucky Derby winner. Audience participation is strongly encouraged as they share hands-on artifacts to connect Isaac’s story through horses, sports, and chores. By the end of the presentation, kids will have an idea of what the story is about, how the research went, and the types of writing/editing issues it encountered. This event will take place at the Youth Service. (All ages/families)
Careful craftsmen
Thursdays from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., join us to knit and crochet items for those in need. This knitting and crocheting group welcomes current and new members to weekly craft meetings at the library. Some materials provided. Beginners are welcome. This event will take place in the Reading Room. (13 years and over)
Halloween movie classics
The library will host a classic Halloween movie on Thursday, October 20 at 6:30 p.m. in the Community Hall. In this 1935 film, Mary Shelley reveals the main characters of her novel survived and goaded by an even crazier scientist, the doctor helps build his monster a companion. (18 and over)
Teen D&D
On Saturday, October 22, from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m., teens can play what some are calling the greatest role-playing game of all time. Players will venture into campaigns that will test their ability to work together and conquer enemies in this tabletop adventure. Registration is required to play.
