Author John Beyer will speak at the High Desert Writers Club in Apple Valley
Author John R. Beyer knows a bit about weaving a story as he winds his way through America’s highways and back alleys.
The High Desert Branch of the California Writers Club will host Beyer at a free presentation at 10 a.m. Sept. 10 at Jess Ranch Community Church in Apple Valley.
Beyer will talk about “How I Became a Storyteller” and how many of his fictional tales and short stories have appeared in four novels, magazines, newspapers and a regular travel column.
His novels include ‘Hunted’, ‘Soft Target’, ‘Operation Scorpion’ and ‘Iquitos, the Past Will Kill’. Each book is law enforcement themed, but sprinkled with a bit of murder, mayhem, terrorism, and humor.
Beyer also writes a weekly travel column, Beyer’s Byways, for the Victorville Daily Press. In 2020, one of his columns won an award from the California Newspaper Publishers Association.
Beyer admitted that twice a year he and his wife, Laureen, travel to the Turks and Caicos Islands near the Bahamas to “brain up new story ideas.”
“My articles come out every Sunday, and I write about different types of places people can visit,” Beyer said. “I research, visit, interview and photograph these pieces weekly, hoping people will read them and then go to the places highlighted in my column.”
Beyer spent years in law enforcement in Southern California. He was a street cop, training officer and member of the SWAT team.
After leaving the force, Beyer served as a class teacher and school and district administrator. He earned a doctorate in educational administration and one in clinical psychology.
During those years, Beyer never gave up his passion for writing — both fiction and nonfiction, he said.
The HDCWC, one of 22 such clubs in the state, meets the second Saturday of each month at the Jess Ranch Church located at 11537 Apple Valley Road.
